Battlefield 2 is the latest concept for the
Battlefield series of games, due for release in Spring 2005. It takes
the basic Battlefield idea and transfers it to modern twenty-first
century warfare, in the mold of the exceptional Desert Combat mod
for Battlefield 1942.
It will offer a high-tech arsenal that includes laser-guided bombs,
heat-seeking missiles, Abrams tanks, F-15 Strike Eagles and Wasp Class
assault carriers.
The game has been built up from scratch, including a brand new graphics
engine, sound engine and animation system, right down to the physics
and rag doll system. The DICE team wanted to reinvent every aspect
of the game, while keeping the core of what made Battlefield fun.
This includes the new lighting and shadow system which makes everything
jump out of the screen and really come to life.

As well as a range of high-tech aircraft there are anti-aircraft vehicles
and weapons to counter them. To use them you have to acquire missile
lock within the inner circle of the HUD. The aircraft have cuntermeasures
(such as flares) and the pilot has an audio tone to warn when they
are being targetted with AA weapons.
The voice commands are now dynamic and just a click away. For example,
if you were looking at an enemy tank rolling up on your position.
The alert command will indicate there is a vehicle in your sight and
flash the location of the vehicle in the map. Now for instance, if
you spot enemy troops coming your way. The same command will specify
there are troops spotted. This is by far superior then the current
system in the Battlefield games.
The new squad based system is also something new to the game. This
system allows squad leaders to direct his teammates dynamically in
game. You can pick an area you want your team to advance on and display
the route in the map view and send it out. Doing this also deploys
a smoke single that is only seen by the same team.
The instant ranking system is something else worth mentioning. You
will no longer wait until the end of the game to see how many medals
you ranked. Now this will be displayed in game as you achieve them.
This was shown when the demonstrating soldier killed a certain number
of enemies. A little arm badge popped in the lower left side of the
screen with an an audio dialog stating Congratulations soldier for
making first class corporal". The game also adds a new running
feature that allows you to run a lot faster when needed.
There are also two new classes to the game; Heavy Assault and Special
Ops, which are very similar to the Desert Combat versions.
The medic class is now rewarded for healing wounded soldiers on their
team, either with shock pedals or medic packs.

Online multiplayer action with 100+ players on the PC.
