The
remake of the old classic finally made it onto the shelves
in time for christmas. But I couldn't wait that long, so I
gave meself an early present, and the rest of this years haul
gotta compete very hard with this one for any attention smile.gif
Damn
this game rocks (yeah I'm that old), it's like being 15 in
front of a Commodore 64 again. They've succeeded completely
in carrying the original great gameplay over to this new edition
of every boys favorite pirate adventure. But now it looks
and sounds good too.
For
those who have no idea what I'm writing about - the original
Pirates were released back in '87 I think, and offered a revolutionary
open gameplay. You start out in 1620-1680 as a young european
reject seeking fame, revenge and fortune in the carribean.
Armed with only you fencing skill and a small ship, plus a
dozen rowdy crewmembers, you are now free to explore, plunder
and/or trade your way through an exiting era of famous pirates
and constant colonial warfare. Several storyplots run throughout
the game offering you a wide choice of activities. What you
choose to do and when is entirely up to you. You start out
picking your nationality; Dutch, French, English or Spanish.
Then the game starts by placing you outside a friendly port
with a small ship and a handful of men, everything else from
then on depends on what tickles your fancy..
For
those who do know what I'm writing about - The new edition
offers a few welcome changes, but the overall feel of the
gameplay is exactly as in the original, which in this context
is a good thing! The swordfights have a bit more options now.
The govenors offer you a variety of missions. You actually
have to dance your way into the govenors daughters hearts
(sounds wuss, but rather fun once you get the hang of it).
Gone are the days of attacking cities by sea - only land combat
allowed now. More fun with new toys in ship to ship combat;
Grapeshot (for crew), Chainshot (for sails) and the usual
Roundshot (for everything). More shiptypes (large frigate
or flag galleon anyone?). Special items to help you out on
your various quests. More villains to chase. More pirate havens.

Should you help out the local govenor escorting his peace
treaty offer to the nearby enemy town or would you rather
romance his lovely daughter? Should you try to locate your
missing family members or is the search for forgotten Inca
cities more to your taste. Is that old treasure map you bought
off an old pirate in the tavern worth investigating or is
the rumour of the spanish treasure galleon leaving for Europe
more tempting? Let's play Pirates and find out wink.gif
